Meditation may play an important role in slowing the progression of dementia. Those who practice meditation and yoga have less atrophy in the hippocampus (a small organ located within the brain’s medial temporal lobe at the center of the brain) and forms an important part of the limbic system, the region that regulates emotions. It is associated mainly with long term memory and plays an important role in spatial navigation, all of which are pertinent to those who have LBD. Meditation increases protective tissues that shield our brain, including cortical thickness (associated with decision making and memory) which slows the aging rate of the brain. The comforting activity also helps seniors feel a sense of connection, less lonely and isolated. Stress and cognitive decline are linked. Meditation helps calm the nervous system and helps participants relax, lessening stress and reducing the stress hormone cortisol which has been known to increase the risk of developing dementia.
