Use of Imagination gives a person the opportunity to create a world of their own or to write down memories. Writing therapy helps with use of speech and words (speech therapy), eye/hand coordination, as well as fingers and hands to write. It helps with meaning-making through writing and sharing of story: mental processing of storyline, sharing of a story, linear function, motivations of characters, plot, conflict, resolution. Writing therapy is also a practice an Occupational Therapist can work with and enhance and will be a wonderful addition to exercises. Ask your loved one to write his or her name, a poem, a short story and you can guide them through.
