NYU LANGONE offers their Family Support Program FREE OF CHARGE to family caregivers who are residents of the Manhattan. The program is based on research which proved that caregivers who receive emotional and practical support experience measurable improvements in depression, stress, and physical well-being. Mention the Lewy Body Dementia Resource Center of New York when setting up an appointment. We are working closely with NYU to assure the best possible help specifically for LBD caregivers.
Some of the services they provide include the following:
Comprehensive evaluation of your situation, so we can personalize our services to suit your needs and those of the person you are caring for
Education to help you understand the causes and symptoms of memory disorders and how to help your family member have the best possible quality of life
Time away from your care responsibilities—called respite—through referrals to professionals who can help you find the most appropriate provider, and a Buddy Program specifically designed for people in the early stage of memory and cognitive impairment
Advice and support from caregivers who have cared for a family member with memory-related conditions through a peer mentoring program
Individual and family consultation with a social worker who can meet with you one-on-one, either in person, by phone, or via online video conferencing
Their goal is to make it easier for you to meet the needs of your family member with memory problems, and to help you maintain your own well-being. Family caregivers include spouses, adult children and grandchildren, other relatives, and close friends. Per Dr. Mary Mittelman, head of the program: “We offer comprehensive support over the course of the disease–an ongoing link to people who care.”
