Caregiver Awareness: Be Observant!

1 min read Norma Loeb
  • When helping with showers or bathing:  look for signs of bedsores, rashes, discoloration, swelling or edema. These can be indications of other medical problems.
  • Look for dehydration:  Pinch the skin on the arm above the wrist. If it doesn’t bounce back, it is a sign of dehydration.
  • Reflux:  When eating, keep the person in an upright position.  Slumping forward or reclining is bad for digestion. Small amounts of food at a time and thorough chewing is important. If they are burping a lot, complaining of heartburn, or have a constant dry cough, it could be a sign of reflux and should be discussed with the doctor
